Though dark circles do not pose a threat from a medical perspective, they affect the way individuals look while inducing an aura of perpetual tiredness.
Creams are among the most common solutions to lighten and brighten the skin under our eyes. Patients are recommended to apply creams daily with focus on the area under the eye. There are also products available that are applied especially before sleeping. A dermatologist will assess the skin condition and probable allergies before providing the cream because each ingredient reacts in a certain manner to different skin types. Most treatments are slow and therefore take at least a month to observe evident results of the treatment.
Chemical peels are skin resurfacing cosmetic treatment that sweep away complexion-dulling dead skin cells and reduce dark circles. The new and regenerated skin is smoother, softer and less wrinkled than before providing an improved and glowing texture to the skin.
Those with infraorbital dark circles can also seek laser treatment via low-fluence Q-switched 1064 nm lasers. They are known to show dramatic decreases in melanin deposition in the upper dermis.
PRP injections include the patient’s platelet-rich blood, which is then injected by the dermatologist into the skin under the eyes to improve dark circles. This is typically performed three times during the course of the treatment.
Under-eye dermal fillers represent an effective option to treat the tear trough i.e. semicircular sunken patch of skin under the eye. Special fillers like Ultra plus and Volbella are injected to avoid the tindle effect, which is a bluish hue that can be seen through the skin.
The usual life is up to a year.
Patients are advised to avoid alcohol and blood thinning agents like aspirin and green tea prior to the procedure. The treatment is lasts for up to thirty minutes, where the area is thoroughly marked, topical numbing agent is applied, and a small needle is injected slowly beneath the skin. An average of 3 to 5 pricks are given on each side, after which the area is softly massaged, and ice is applied.
High-intensity workout must be avoided in the next 24 hours. The most common side effects include bruising, swelling, and temporary discomfort in the injected area. It is extremely crucial to receive treatment from an established dermatologist because their expertise avoids the risk of accidental injection into a blood vessel around the eyeballs. The failure to recognize this mistake can lead to scarring, tissue damage, and even blinding. However, such incidents are extremely rare.
